Zero Waste Day 2025

Each year, approximately around 50 million tyres get to their end-of-life in the UK. However, many innovative companies are working hard to change this by finding ways to repurpose and recycle these tyres. Today, we’re shining a spotlight on their incredible efforts and sharing how you can play a part in keeping your end-of-life tyres out of landfills and into the hands of these recycling pioneers. Together, we can drive meaningful change for a more sustainable future.

Companies are starting to build a new future, where tyres have a new place in the world around us. Replacing materials that are unsustainable and need to be used less frequently. By using tyre waste, this will impact other industries as well as the tyre industry.

Big Atom

Big Atom is part of this change. Back in 2017, in Ellesmere Port, a simple idea was sparked: it’s easier to create new products from raw materials than to recycle existing ones. Change was the only thing on their mind after this and they set out on a mission to transform the narrative of tyre waste. They are now leading the transformation of technologies in the tyre recycling industry. Currently recycling 500,000 plus tyres per year with 2 tonnes saved in CO2e for every tonne of tyres recycled. Making a huge difference to our industries waste and where it’s headed.

With a vision to build a world where resources never go to waste, Big Atom align perfectly with the mission of Zero Waste Day—challenging the inefficiencies of traditional waste management and driving a future where recycling takes precedence over extracting new resources from the earth. Born from seven years of hands-on experience in tyre collection, processing, and chemical recycling innovation, they have developed a platform to solve key problems stakeholders face across the value chain.

At the heart of our platform is our innovative digital recycling voucher, a standardised recycling contract that makes waste management as simple as issuing and redeeming a gift card. By integrating tyre manufacturers, wholesalers, waste tyre disposers, tyre collectors, and recyclers into a recycling network, we ensure that waste tyres are collected & processed efficiently – allowing us to accelerate a circular economy.

Tyrecrete

Tyrecrete are building a recycled future with tyre waste aggregate, and raising awareness of how tyres can be used in a circular economy helping other industries.

The use of tyre waste as aggregate for concrete would create a new circular economy giving back to the road and construction industries. Every element of the tyre is used for the benefit of the new concrete method. A similar method as Tyrecrete’s has been put into place in New Zealand and Australia where they have proved that it is effective and reliable. Tyrecrete have had two trials with 2 major companies and are looking for end-of-life tyre supplies.

Hatko – GCRE UK project, world’s first carbon neutral noise barrier

Hatko Sound Barriers is a global leader in sustainable infrastructure solutions, specialising in recycled rubber noise barriers made from end-of-life tyres. With a mission to tackle both urban noise pollution and tyre waste, Hatko transforms these environmental challenges into an opportunity through its “2 Pollutions 1 Solution” strategy. By repurposing waste tyres into high-performance noise barriers, the company actively contributes to carbon neutrality, circular economy principles, and sustainable urban development.

With the industry’s lowest carbon footprint (2.7 kg CO₂e/m², EPD-certified), Hatko achieved a major milestone by completing the world’s first carbon-neutral noise barrier project in the UK. The innovative barriers prevent up to 200 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per kilometre compared to incineration, require almost zero maintenance, and seamlessly integrate with hybrid systems, enhancing their efficiency and adaptability. Hatko continues to set new standards in sustainable noise reduction, offering environmentally responsible solutions for modern infrastructure projects.

GRAMM are HATKO UK Exclusive Partner. Established over 30 years as a noise barrier specialist offering innovative and sustainable solutions to all sectors. Offering full ECI design support through to full installation across the UK.

The NTDA would like to see what our tyre service member’s think of these methods and if they would like to get involved with any of these schemes. The NTDA believes that our industry can make a huge difference to the environment if we make this move into a circular economy and consider what we may or may not be doing to our planet.
